Short Haired Golden Retriever And The Reasons Behind

Like Tweet Pin it Share Share Email

Golden Retriever is the 4th smartest dog breed in the world. They’re lovely, smart and beautiful with a long yellow coat. However, some owners don’t know what’s going on with their dogs because instead of having a long coat like others, they have a short fur which makes them so abnormal. So, let’s talk about short haired Golden Retriever in this post!

Basics of Golden Retriever

Origin

Golden Retriever is a large dog breed whose origin is in Scotland. This breed is one of 10 most popular dog breeds in the world (besides German Shepherd, Rottweiler,Bulldog,Boxer, etc.) with some special features like intelligence, beauty, growth up at a very slow speed, and playing well with kids. They’re recognized by the AKC (the American Kennel Club) as a pure dog breed.

Hair

Golden Retriever has a thick and long hair coat. Their hair can be wavy or straight, depending on the genes. The thicker feather stays mainly on the chest, thighs, bell, and tail.

There are three common colors that are found in pure Golden Retrievers: light golden, golden, and dark golden. In general, their colors can be a little bit brighter or darker than the standard ones, but they are still listed in the list of pure dog breeds.

Sometimes, you may see a strange Golden Retriever with a black coat. Although this guy is unique, he’s just a mixed dog, not a pure one.

Usually, Golden Retrievers are preferred by those who love doing vigorous exercises. They are very active and need to be active every day. Moreover, if you want to get a Golden Retriever, your house should be large and have a wide playground. In case you are the one who really loves swimming, a Golden Retriever could be a great swimming partner because his swimming skill is very good. He also enjoys swimming, too.

Short Haired Golden Retriever – Why?

Recently, the American Kennel Club hasn’t recognized any short haired Golden Retriever. The reason is simple: To this Club, short hair doesn’t come from the pure breed.

So, if one day, you realize that your Golden Retriever doesn’t look like others and you still don’t know why. Don’t worry, there are three reasons as follows:

They May Not Be A Purebred Dog

When you paid for a pure breed, it doesn’t mean you can receive the one that you asked. Lots of bad guys out there are willing to cheat you for money. The dogs you get can be a mix of a Golden Retriever and another breed. Commonly, Golden Retriever is crossed with Labrador because they look similar up to 90%. Features that allow us to distinguish them are just the length and the colors of the coat.

If you’re wondering whether your dog is a hybrid, the easiest-to-find guy that can help you make it clear is a vet. He may ask you to take a testing kit in order to identify your dogs breed. Everything will be clear until then.

In general, there are four main dog breeds that are used to cross with Golden Retriever

Chesapeake Bay Retriever: The mix of this breed and Golden Retriever may have a half-curly and half-straight or wavy hair with abnormal colors.

Curly Coated Retriever: The mix of this breed and Golden Retriever may have a half-curly and half-straight or wavy hair with black or liver color.

Labrador Retriever: The mix of this breed and Golden Retriever may have a short hair with black, chocolate or yellow color. For other hybrids of Lab, you might want to check out Catahoula Lab Mix or Doberman Lab Mix.

Flat-Coated Retriever: The mix of this breed and Golden Retriever may have a long hair with black or liver color.

They Have A Unique Coat

As said, Golden Retrievers belong to the long hair breed because they have a very long and dense coat. However, in fact, there’s nothing to ask all of Golden Retrievers to have this feature. Some Golden Retrievers can be found with short hair, but when giving a testing kit on them, they are confirmed to be the standard one. In these cases, the key is in their genes. They may have some genetic variation which makes them have a short-hair coat compared to the same dog breed.

However, you must know that this case is quite rare. You will know this if you hold a group of same-parent dogs, and among them, there will be one individual whose hair is short. So, it’s definitely because of the problems with the genes.

They May Be Another Breed

Golden Retriever has many “brothers” which all belong to the Retriever and all of them look quite the same. So that, you can be cheated or given a wrong dog breed. Let’s consider two dog breeds below:

Labrador Retriever

First and foremost, in spite of belonging to the same Retriever, the Labrador has very short hair.

They have three official colors: yellow, chocolate and black. There’re also fox red and polar white color, but these aren’t recognized as a pure one.

The Labrador is heavier (65 to 80 pounds) than the Golden (55 to 75 pounds).

The Labrador has the life expectancy of about 10 to 12 years, which is almost the same as 10 to 13 years of the Golden.

One more thing you may witness clearly that is despite having short hair, the Labrador sheds a lot in all year round, while the Golden just shed a small amount of hair and in a certain season.

Flat-Coated Retriever

This breed is similar to the Golden in having a dense thick coat, but their fur is always flat, not wavy like the Golden. Besides, their coat isn’t water-repellent.

This breed has three main coat colors: Black, liver, and blonde. The blonde color makes them look more like the Golden.

Flat-Coated Retriever is a little bit less active than the Golden. They rarely make such a noise. However, like the Golden Retriever, they need to do exercise every day, at least an hour per day.

The life expectancy of this breed is quite short, just about 8 to 10 years.

Conclusion

There’s no short haired Golden Retriever which is recognized officially. And three main reasons for that are: they’re unique naturally, they’re not pure, or you have confused them with other Retriever breeds. If you want to find out the most accurate answer to this problem, we recommend you to come to a vet.
